A word
of warning: I wrote this in a slightly cynical manner.
One
of the main things I love about the series "Mobile Suit
Gundam Wing" is there isn't a complete hero and there isn't
a completely evil bad guy. Almost every single character has
conflict, and at times you can even become confused about where
loyalties lie. Or who, exactly, you should be cheering for. It's
one of my favorite things about this series... the
characterization. And how every character plays a part. So here
you have it: The
Purposes of People and Things in Gundam Wing: (It's color coded too! ^_^)
Heero Yuy: Plays
the part of the Imperfect Hero #1.
He's a trained assassin who has trouble assassinating some
people, and has all the angst and conflict of a psychopath. He
tries to kill himself several times, and not only fails, but
usually ends up saving the day in his attempt. Except for the
once he *thought* he was saving the day, and ended up killing a Semi - Important Sacrificial Plot Making
Character. In retaliation he runs around trying
to convince others to kill him for his fatal mistake... which
doesn't work because I truly believe that Heero has been
condemned to live a very LOONG life. ^_^ Basically he's a good
guy... sometimes he tries to kill other wrong people, but usually
fails in that too. ^_^ His other main purpose is to try to defeat
Imperfectly Evil Guy #1.
Duo Maxwell: (Almost) Perfect Hero #2.
The purpose of Duo Maxwell in the anime is to provide the humor.
Because of his optimistic ways and joking manner Duo Maxwell is a
Favorite Character Of Most
Fangirls(tm). One of his main drawbacks is that
he's a friend with Imperfect Hero
#1. So thus he kind of gets hauled along for
which ever psychopathic adventure Imperfect
Hero #1 wants to haul us off on. One of the
bonus' of being friends with Imperfect
Hero #1 is he thus wins the immunity of being one
of those lucky people that Imperfect
Hero #1 can't kill. Duo Maxwell spends a great
deal of the anime going "What the Hell??" HE doesn't
get what's going on around him. All he know is that he has a job
to do, and he does it to the best of his ability... even if it
means getting yelled at by Important
Perfect Heroine #1.
Trowa Barton: Imperfect Hero #3. Also
Known As the guy who we have no idea which side he's fighting
for. He even spends a good portion of the anime not fighting,
'cause he loses his memories for a while. Trowa Barton is
quiet... but not as quiet as some people think... he just appears
this way because a good deal of the rest of the Characters tend
to run off at the mouth. :p His style of fighting is one of
infiltration... he'll do whatever it takes to achieve the
ultimate goal (which is to bring down Oz, b/t/w), and that he
does it by the means of pretending that he's the enemy. He will
even go as far as to injure some of the other Imperfect Heroes in
his task because they don't matter in the ultimate scheme of
things. The other purpose of Imperfect Hero #3 is to be there for
Imperfect Hero #4...
to give him long speeches when Imperfect
Hero #4 goes insane, to rescue Imperfect Hero #4 from (Almost) Completely Evil Chick #2,
etc., etc. You get the general idea.
Quatre Rabera Winner:
Imperfect Hero #4.
Which is really too bad. The purpose of Quatre, me thinks, is to
induce sympathy. Here we have a sweet little kid who seems like
he would never harm a fly... and then he goes insane. (The
problem with making a sweet little kid who would never harm a fly
kill countless people in a meaningless war, and then have the bad
guys assassinate his father in from of him, etc., etc. ^_^) So
halfway through the anime Imperfect
Hero #4 has definitely switched to Pretty Psychopathic Confused Guy #1--
"must destroy colony" -- It takes a lecture from Imperfect Hero #3 and a
couple of shots from pretty upset Imperfect
Hero #1 to bring him out of it. Then he goes
mostly back to normal. And then (Almost)
Completely Evil Chick #2 comes along to irritate
him and then stab him. ^_^
Chang Wufei: Ahh,
Wufei. Wufei plays the part of Imperfect
Hero #5. And the part of Pretty
Psychopathic Confused Guy #2. And (if you are
watching "Endless Waltz") the part of Imperfectly Evil Guy #1.
(Him and Zechs trade places. ^_^) To say that Chang Wufei doesn't
have problems is to say that dropping from a three hundred foot
high building without a parachute isn't bad for you. O.o Imperfect Hero #5 comes
trekking into the series with so much emotional baggage from the
war that you could drown in it. (I guess it had something to do
with a dead wife and blowing up his home, ne? Except that came
later...) Anyway, if it weren't for Gun-toting
Perfect Heroine #1, he'd probably would have
stopped fighting back in episode #12, and instead have spent the
rest of the war meditating in China. But no, we needed Imperfect Hero #5 to
defeat Imperfectly Evil Guy #2.
Basically he keeps himself fairly stable throughout most of the
rest of the series... except for mild lapses.
Zechs Marquise: Imperfectly Evil Guy #1.
He's the brother of Important
Perfect Heroine #1. Um... he likes to engage in
combat with Imperfect Hero #1...
which is why he gets the position of Imperfectly
Evil Guy #1, even though he isn't as important in
the wide scheme of things as Imperfectly
Evil Guy #2.
... to be continued...
